The Bank of Ireland has been asked to reconsider a decision to cease its "travelling bank" service in Mayo and Galway.
The move has been described as "a retrograde step" by the chairman of the Consumers' Association of Ireland, Mr Michael Kilcoyne, and by Achill-based Mayo county councillor Mr Pat Kilbane of Fine Gael.
Mr Kilcoyne said the decision showed the contempt and the disregard huge organisations like the Bank of Ireland have for ordinary people who live in isolated areas.
Mr Kilbane said many villages on the island of Achill have no ATM service.
"I am extremely disappointed that this decision was taken without having any dialogue, any discussions or any debate with the local community. I think it is very negative and very high-handed."
In a statement the bank confirmed its travelling bank service would cease on April 16th.
