Adapazari - As rescue operations in the earthquake-hit Turkish city of Adapazari wound down yesterday, a makeshift bank teller in a yellow van emerged as a sign of hope amid the rubble.

Mr Suat Begenal, a resident of the capital of the north-western province of Sakarya, walked out of the improvised branch of the Vakif bank with a wad of banknotes and a smile. His savings, if not his home, had survived the massive earthquake. The Vakif bank was the first to open its doors yesterday in the van on Ataturk Avenue - sitting next to the ruins of what used to be the Ataturk office.
