Barcelona table official offer for Kewell

Barcelona have joined Manchester United and Arsenal in the race to sign Leeds midfielder Harry Kewell.

Barcelona have joined Manchester United and Arsenal in the race to sign Leeds midfielder Harry Kewell.

Barca, beaten to the punch by fierce rivals Real Madrid in the race for David Beckham's signature, are reported to have tabled an official offer for Elland Road club's prized asset.

Leeds are willing to sell the Australian, who is celebrating the birth of his second child this morning, despite offering to make him their highest-paid player.

A £2.5million-per-year, two-year contract extension is now on the table, but after narrowly avoiding relegation last season and with no European football for Leeds ahead, such a package is not as appealing.

Kewell was known to have been monitoring David Beckham's saga, and with the England captain now having joined Real Madrid for £25 million, the way is clear for a move to Old Trafford.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon is apparently now working towards attracting Kewell - among others - to the Premiership champions, given the club is armed with the Beckham cash.

Barcelona, desperate for a big-name signing after new president Joan Laporta lost out on Beckham, also continue to be linked with PSG's Brazilian star Ronaldinho, while they are also poised to launch an audacious bid for Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

They hope to open talks with the Frenchman before the end of the week.

Henry is currently on international duty with France at the Confederations Cup and scored his country's winner in last night's match against Colombia.

Having missed out on Beckham, the Catalans are desperate to land a big-name player - and Henry fits the bill.

A delegation from Barcelona arrived in Paris today, headed by vice-president Sandro Rosell.

Rosell's press secretary Juanjo Castillo said: "Henry is one of the players we're hoping to talk to this week.

"We have to see whether he is interested in coming.

"Everyone likes Henry and he's a great player."

The club are still hoping to lure PSV Eindhoven coach Guus Hiddink to the club.
