A 25-year-old barman appeared before Judge James O'Connor at a special District Court sitting in Killarney, Co Kerry, yesterday, charged with the murder of a 50-year-old man in Tralee, on August 15th, 2006.

Brendan O'Connor, Monalee House, Monavalley, Tralee, was charged with the murder of Edward Clancy, at Bridge Street, Tralee. He was remanded in custody to the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court.

Det Sgt Fearghal Pattwell, Tralee Garda station, gave evidence of arresting the accused in Ballyphehane, Cork city, at 11.36am yesterday. He was later charged at Tralee garda station.

The witness said that when he read the charge to the accused and cautioned him, Mr O'Connor replied no.

State Solicitor Aidan Judge made an application for Mr O'Connor to be returned for trial.

Solicitor for the accused, David Ramsey, accepted service of the book of evidence and legal aid was granted.

A number of people have been arrested during the investigation, but this is the only court appearance so far.

Mr Clancy was found lying in a pool of blood close to the centre of Tralee in the early hours of August 15th, 2006.
