The Irish Basketball Association has postponed all National League fixtures until further notice due to growing fears foot-and-mouth disease could spread in the Republic.
The Irish Colleges Inter-Varsity competition, scheduled for this weekend at NUI Maynooth, is another prominent fixture to be postponed.
Spokeswoman for the Irish Basketball Association Maire Scully believes a foot-and-mouth outbreak will have a damaging effect on the sport.
"We only have two weeks left in our season and it seems increasingly likely that we may have to call a freeze to our championship. It really would be a damp squib to the season," she told ireland.com.
"Certain games, more so those in Dublin, could have been played but it was recommended that we put the necessary precautions in place."
She said: "The general feeling was rather than allow some games go ahead, it was better to postpone all games . . . it would only cause negative feedback to play just a few."
The Irish Basketball Association of Ireland will meet on Wednesday night to discuss the chances of completing the season.
The Boy’s Four Countries International Tournament, which was to be hosted by Ireland in Galway this weekend, has also been cancelled.
Also off are the Cadbury Time-Out All-Ireland Schoolgirls Finals, scheduled for Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th March at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
