Bilbao - A spokesman for the Basque separatist coalition Herri Batasuna warned yesterday that the peace process in the Basque country was "not irreversible", despite an openended truce called on September 18th by the group's armed wing, ETA.

"People must understand that we are not yet in either a peace process or a conflict-resolution phase," Mr Arnaldo Otegi told the separatist daily Euskadi Informacion. "The turning point will be when the Spanish government makes a kind of Downing Street Declaration," he said, referring to the Anglo-Irish declaration that marked the opening of the Northern Ireland peace process.
