RADIO STATIONS Today FM and Newstalk have been asked to provide details of their plan to combine newsroom resources to the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI).
A spokeswoman for the BCI confirmed that the organisation intended to compare the proposal with the two national commercial stations' original commitments.
Earlier this week, it emerged that the services of reporters in the two newsrooms are to be pooled. Newstalk and Today FM are both owned by Denis O'Brien's media firm Communicorp.
"The BCI was in communication with Newstalk and Today FM today," the BCI spokeswoman said yesterday.
"The BCI asked them to inform them what their proposal entails and following that they will assess that against their commitments in their original contract."
The BCI is opposed to the idea of merging the newsrooms.
However, spokespeople for the stations have denied that a merger is taking place.
Earlier this month, The Irish Times reported that revenues at the Communicorp group grew by 21 per cent to €57 million last year.
The group had an operating profit of €760,000.
Communicorp owns 44 stations in nine countries.
