The Green Party has branded the €13m loss to the Exchequer following the building of a carpark a Beaumont Hospital a 'disaster'.

"The problems with the car park at Beaumont are indicative of the dangers of public-private partnership where there is zero risk for developers," Green Party TD Mr Dan Boyle told a Public Accounts Committee meeting, at which representatives of the Beaumont Hospital and the Department of Health were questioned.

Earlier, the Comptroller and Auditor General Mr John Purcell told the Committee that an agreement between the hospital management and those who had built the carpark had been 'mismanaged'.

The agreement behind the building of the carpark involved the foregoing of income tax on the part of the Exchequer. Along with this, rent receipts for the property were lower than expected. The total loss incurred was estimated to be in region of €8.9m to €13m, it was revealed.

The chief executive of Beaumont Hospital, Mr John Lamont, conceded that that 'bad management' had occurred at the hospital in relation to the partnership agreement.
