Belgian police detained 14 people suspected having links with al-Qaeda today, including three thought to have been planning an attack in the country, according to the Belga news agency.
On its website, broadcaster RTBF quoted unnamed justice sources as saying the thwarted attack could have been on the two-day European Union leaders' summit starting today.
A government source said federal prosecutors had detained the suspects purely as a preventive measure.
"There were indications of the possibility that they were planning an attack somewhere," said the source.
An EU spokesman said there had been no change to security arrangements for the summit.
