SUDAN: The African Union (AU) is to meet Sudanese Darfur rebels in Geneva tomorrow in an effort to revive peace talks which broke down over the weekend, a spokesman for their Swiss hosts said yesterday.

The rebels walked out of talks in Addis Ababa after Sudan's government rejected six preconditions for dialogue, including the disarming of Janjaweed Arab militias and prosecution of those suspected of genocide and ethnic cleansing in Darfur.

"Thursday's talks are about the conditions under which rebels will participate in future talks," said Mr Andy Andrea, spokesman for the Geneva-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue.

The AU Darfur envoy Mr Hamid Algabid told a news conference late on Monday the organisation would meet both sides of the conflict separately this week to find a way to restart talks.
