A bigamy case was adjourned at Galway District Court yesterday. Mr Thomas Larkin, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, is charged with marrying Ms Pauline McHugh during the lifetime of his first wife, at Merlin Park Registry Office, Merlin Park, Galway, on April 17th, 2000.
Judge John Garavan asked the prosecution if the charge could be dealt with by his court. He felt bigamy must be an indictable offence and he did not have jurisdiction to deal with it. Garda Insp Tom O'Brien said the DPP had directed it could be dealt with summarily in the district court. There were 14 witnesses, two of whom were outside the jurisdiction.
He asked to have the matter adjourned to November.
Mr Adrian MacLynn, defending, said he needed time to prepare a case for his client, who was not in court. He asked for an adjournment to January. Judge Garavan adjourned to January 2nd, 2002.
