Members of the Dail are to be asked to sign a petition calling for the British government to hold a public inquiry into the prison murder of the Portadown loyalist Billy Wright.

His father, Mr David Wright, intends to travel to Leinster House with the petition, currently circulating in the North, and ask the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrews, to add their signatures.

"I have already spoken with the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin and made them fully aware of the questionable circumstances of my son's death in the Maze prison in 1997", Mr Wright said.

"I now intend to formally ask them and all the TDs currently elected to Dail Eireann to sign this petition and support my family in the same manner they have supported the Finucane and Nelson families in their quest for truth and justice".

Mr Wright rejected allegations that his Dublin trip was a political stunt. "Certainly not. I am not aligned to any political party whatsoever. I never have been", he said. "My son's killing is a human rights issue. Calls for a public inquiry have already been endorsed by all the political parties in the North, including Sinn Fein."

Asked why he was campaigning for an inquiry despite the fact three men had been convicted of the murder and were serving life imprisonment, Mr Wright said: "There are still too many unanswered questions regarding this murder, which I and many others believe was state-sponsored, state-sanctioned and state-arranged."
