Karl Meyer from Madison, Wisconsin, is a journalist whose work has appeared in the Washington Post and the New York Times. He has been a visiting fellow at Princeton, Yale and Oxford. He is the author of a number of historical books, including The Plundered Past, The Pleasures of Archaeology and The Cuban Invasion. He is the winner of a George Peabody Broadcasting Award.

Shareen Brysac, wife of Karl Meyer is an author and documentary producer who has worked with CBS News. Her documentaries include Juilliard and Beyond: A Life in Music, American Dream, American Nightmare and Picasso: Once in a Lifetime. She has won five Emmys, as well as gold and silver medals from the New York and Chicago Film Festivals.

Tournament of Shadows, from which this extract is taken, is their first collaboration and was first published in the US last year by Perseus Books. It has just been published in the UK by Littlebrown at £25 in UK.
