Blackrock in Cork to get €1.2m revamp

ONE OF Cork’s most historic waterside villages is to receive a €1

ONE OF Cork’s most historic waterside villages is to receive a €1.2 million revamp this year to boost the area’s profile for water- based sports.

Cork City Council has sanctioned a further €170,000 for the construction of a pontoon for Lee Rowing Club in Blackrock on the southside of the city. It is hoped this will see the club attract new members and regattas.

The redevelopment will also allow for a playground in the village and a small park.

Work is set to begin on the project in the autumn.

Cork City Council adopted the Blackrock Village Area Action Plan at a council meeting in April 2006. This followed extensive consultation on a draft plan, which was published in October 2005.

The council believes now is the time to undertake the improvement of the village.

Councillors say the area has tremendous potential given its existing assets, including its location fronting on to the Lee, its central position to surrounding residential areas, and its role as the physical, social and services focus for the area.

Deirdre Clune TD (Fine Gael) has welcomed the news that funding is to be provided to begin the redevelopment.

“This redevelopment plan was first approved when I was a city councillor and I am glad to see that the current council remains committed to the project,” said Ms Clune.

“The marina is a much-valued amenity in Cork with massive potential, and these redevelopment plans will benefit everyone in Cork, not just people in Blackrock.

“I look forward to seeing work start in the autumn.”
