Gardaí in Fermoy have identified the body of a man taken yesterday from the River Blackwater in Co Cork.

The man, believed to be a foreign national, was recovered near Fermoy Rowing Club at 1.25pm.

A garda spokesman described him as being aged between mid 40s and early 50s, 5ft 10in in height of slim build with black hair going grey and balding at the front. He has the word "Rangers" tattooed on his upper right arm, is missing the tip of the index finger on his right hand and has a surgical scar on his abdomen.

The man was wearing a dark blue denim Santa Fe hoodie, a woollen multi-coloured jumper, a black t-shirt with “Protect your Nuts" written in silver with picture of a squirrel underneath, dark blue jeans and white, black and red reebok runners.

Gardaí said they are anxious to trace the man's final movements and have asked for the public's assistance in this regard.

Anyone who may have been in the vicinity between 9am and 1.25pm are asked to contact gardaí. Investigating officers said they would also like to talk to anyone who may have seen the man at Barnane Walk, Fermoy, or anyone who may have been in the Barnane walk area between 9am and 1.30pm.
