British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair has promised a referendum on whether to join the euro if the Treasury rules a number of economic tests have been passed.

In an interview in today's Financial Times, Mr Blair said: "If the tests are passed, we will put it to the people in a referendum. There is no question about that".

The five tests on convergence between Britain and euro zone economies are to be assessed by Chancellor of the Exchequer Mr Gordon Brown in June.
