British Prime Minister Tony Blair today told his party to "fight and win" for his vision of the future of Britain, in a general election campaign in which nothing can be taken for granted. He told Labour's annual Scottish conference in Inverness it would take two terms of office "at least" to build the Britain Labour had promised.

But with speculation about the timing of the general election mounting daily, the prepared text on Mr Blair's speech gave no indication of when the date might be called.
Instead he set out Labour's stall as a party that would fight the election as "the party of economic competence" - while repeatedly cautioning against complacency.
"This country had the Tories for about two decades. It will take at least two terms to build the Britain we promised," said the Prime Minister.
"But we're getting there. And provided we guard against complacency, put our case with vigour, go out and show we're the people's party, fighting for them, helping them in their struggle, honouring the struggle, we can win their trust once more and win that better future for them and the country."
