An explosion has occurred in a hotel car park in the Spanish holiday resort of Salou today but there were no casualties.

The explosion happened minutes after authorities received a warning that a car bomb had been planted in the coastal tourist resort south of Barcelona.

There were no casualties and only minor damage from the blast, which followed recent threats by the Basque separatist group ETA to attack Spain's summer tourist industry.

It was unclear whether the explosion was the car bomb itself or a controlled blast carried out by police to deactivate the device.
