At least 23 miners have been killed and 28 are still missing this evening after a gas explosion in a coal mine in southwest China's Guizhou province, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The blast occurred at around 3 pm at the Muchonggou colliery in Liupanshui city, the agency said, noting there were 353 people working in the mine at the time of the accident.

Xinhua said 302 miners had returned to the ground, 40 of them injured.

Another 28 miners were still missing, Xinhua said.

A rescue team has gone to the scene, it said, adding the cause of the explosion was under investigation.
