Manchester United winger Jesper Blomqvist will stay at the club without pay after his contract expires in June, a Swedish newspaper reported today.

Blomqvist said he had an outside chance of getting a new contract with the club if he proved his recovery from a serious knee injury.

The 27-year-old Swedish international, who has not played a first-team match for two years, told the daily Expressenhe had agreed with United manager Alex Ferguson that he would remain with the Premier League champions for two months.

"It was I who wanted this solution and now I get the chance to show that I am not playing for the money," said Blomqvist.

The player's last senior appearance was in the 1999 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich.

"I really would like to stay with United but I realise that it is a long shot," he said.

Blomqvist joined Manchester United from Italian Serie A club Parma in 1998 on a three-year contract. He made his name with Swedish club IFK Gothenburg before moving to Italy with AC Milan.
