British soldiers involved in the Bloody Sunday shootings are in danger because of a "misunderstanding" over the risk they face from terrorists, the High Court in London was told yesterday.
Security services had assessed the threat to them as "moderate". That was crucial to a decision that the soldiers' surnames should be revealed when they give evidence at the new international Bloody Sunday inquiry, said a QC.
Asking three judges to overturn the decision, Mr Edwin Glasgow QC said the security services had now told the Ministry of Defence that the Bloody Sunday tribunal, in denying the men continuing anonymity, had "misunderstood the nature of the assessment".
The hearing continues.
