BMW is recalling 350,000 cars worldwide – and 533 in Ireland – due to possible brake problems.
The cars affected are petrol engined V8 and V12 models of the 5-Series, 6-Series and 7-Series, along with cars from the Rolls Royce brand. The cars affected were built between 2001 and 2009.
A spokeswoman said the problem arises from a potential leak in the power braking system that may develop over time.
Drivers will notice a gradual reduction in brake pressure, requiring them to press harder on the brake pedal. The firm says the problem was identified internally and there have been no reported crashes or injuries due to the problem.
The 533 Irish customers will be contacted by BMW and asked to bring their car to a dealership, where a one-hour procedure to line the braking system will be carried out.
As always with recalls the car firm will cover the costs. Concerned customers can also phone a freephone number 1890 719 420 if they suspect their car may be involved.
The move will cause embarrassment at the world's largst premium car brand, particularly over the recall of 5,800 Rolls Royces, which retailed in Ireland for over €500,000 each.
In the United Kingdom, the company is to recall around 26,000 BMW models, as well as about 1,200 Rolls-Royces due to the braking problem.
