A new body of lawyers formed to improve understanding of strict new health and safety rules was annouced today.
The Health and Safety Lawyers' Association of Ireland (HSLAI) will meet to share knowledge among solicitors, barristers and lecturers to develop best practice in the face of increasing regulation.
The association was set up in response to the introduction of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
The legislation, which must be complied with by all employers, has brought new areas of the workplace under its control and enforces strict penalties for both companies and individuals who breach the legislation.
Aisling Butler, HSLAI chair and an expert in the area at William Fry Solicitors, said it will provide a forum for experts to discuss complex issues arising from the new laws.
"Ireland's legislation on health and safety at work has been extensively updated to address the issue of death or illness in the workplace," she said.
"This legislation is much more complex and far-reaching than its predecessor, with an onus on the employer to meet standards and ensure employees are informed and trained to keep the workplace safe."
It is hoped the HSLAI will allow members of the legal profession to gain a greater understanding of the legislation and underlying regulations.
