Two men were being questioned last night about a suspected murder after a man's body was recovered from the Newry Canal, Co Down, at the rear of Drumalane Park, Newry. The Workers' Party said the killing was sectarian.
The body was discovered by RUC divers during a search after two men walked into the local police station on Sunday and gave themselves up for questioning.
Detectives said they had ruled out paramilitary involvement but were keeping an open mind on all other possibilities.
The Workers' Party president, Mr Tom French, said: "I am led to believe this was a blatant sectarian murder and I want the police to carry out a top-level investigation into the full circumstances."
