A bomb has exploded at the printing offices of a privately-owned Zimbabwe newspaper critical of the government, causing extensive damage to equipment, a company official has said.

"There was a bomb explosion at around 3 a.m. No one was injured but the damage was quite extensive and we won't be able to print tomorrow's paper", said Mr Muchadeyi Masunda, Chief Executive Officer of Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe, which publishes the Daily News.

Police were not immediately available for comment.

Last June a bomb destroyed a gallery beside the Daily Newseditorial offices after several government officials criticised its coverage of the politically-linked violence which gripped the country ahead of parliamentary elections narrowly won by President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party.
