Gardai have recovered books of evidence stolen from a courtroom during the case of a man accused of murdering two men whose bodies were found in the Grand Canal in Co Kildare last year.

The books, charge sheets and a deposition statement were taken last week during a court appearance by Mr Mark Desmond (26), of Lally Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin, who is accused of murdering Patrick Murray (19) and Darren Carey (20) between December 28th, 1999, and January 10th, 2000.

He has been in custody since his arrest nearly 15 months ago and has made a number of appearances on remand before the District Court.

In Dublin District Court yesterday, Judge Timothy Lucey remanded Mr Desmond in custody to Cloverhill Prison for two weeks.
