It's not every day that an Irishman has the chance to turn winemaker and win, so tasty Correas Syrah-Sangiovese 1996 (outlets above, £5.99£6.99) is a double cause for celebration.
"Italian grapes are trendy, Italian food is trendy . . . Can we make something with Sangiovese, maybe blended with a bit of Cabernet?" Gilbeys's Martin Moran asked Correas during a visit to Argentina. "Sangiovese? Nobody overseas ever wants that, and anyway we've no Cabernet," was the response. `OK, what about Syrah?' The outcome: a succulent, easy-drinking red with a nice dash of pepper, at a bargain price. Look out for it.
