Not only is Hill of Hope Verdelho, Hunter Valley, 1998 (Mitchells Kildare St and Glasthule, £8.95) a wine that's new to Ireland but it's from a brand-new producer. Australian pharmacist Michael Hope set up his venture in a derelict winery just two years ago, and his lovely citrussy Verdelho - crisper and fresher than many - is tipped as the flagship wine. "The warm climate's answer to Sauvignon Blanc," he says. Qantas bought most of 1997 to pour in first class.
Let's make sure we get our share of the 1998. Made for summer: try it with a mildly spicy chicken salad, and swoon.
