A military policeman told a court yesterday he was assaulted while working as a part-time security man in Judge Roy Bean's pub in Nassau Street, Dublin.

Mr Gerard Boland, of Woodford Park, Clondalkin, told the Circuit Civil Court that as he opened the door to let people out, one of a group of drunks he had refused entry to hit him in the mouth, damaging his teeth.

Mr Boland had sued Mr Christopher Egan, trading as Judge Roy Beans, for up to £30,000 damages for negligence in not providing a second security man as extra protection.

In seeking a direction to dismiss the claim, Mr Michael Byrne, for Mr Egan, said there would be evidence to show that the assault had happened shortly after 5 p.m. and not much later as claimed.

Judge Patrick McCartan, dismissing Mr Boland's claim, said it was unfortunate that in Dublin there came a time in the evenings when publicans had to provide security on their front doors. But it would be unreasonable to expect publicans to provide a constant, early-evening security presence of at least two people outside their premises.
