Lee Bowyer will have a medical today before completing his free transfer to Newcastle.
The controversial 26-year-old midfielder is due on Tyneside for the tests this afternoon and is expected to sign the four-year contract he agreed in May.
Bowyer will be Sir Bobby Robson's first, and perhaps riskiest, capture of the summer as the 70-year-old attempts to strengthen a squad which took the Magpies to within touching distance of the Premiership title for a brief spell at the end of the last campaign.
Bowyer's form at Leeds singled him out as one of the most promising talents in the Premiership, but his off-the-field problems left a huge question-mark over his international future.
It also marked the decay of his relationship with the Elland Road club and eventually saw him farmed out to West Ham at the end of last season after a proposed £9 million sterling move to Liverpool had fallen through during the summer.
"We had to give it [the signing] an awful lot of consideration," Robson said after the deal was formally agreed. "I've met the boy, I've met his girlfriend and I was very warmed by both of them.
"Lee knows that he made an error, but he needs a second chance. He is obviously aware of what happened, but that's in the past".
