A 14-YEAR-OLD Galway boy who died suddenly on Sunday while on a trip to the Gaeltacht has been named as Kyle McCrann from Ardrahan.
The boy, who was in the second week of an Irish course in the Corr na Móna area of the Connemara Gaeltacht, was playing hurling at about 2.30pm on Sunday when he collapsed. Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he was later pronounced dead at Galway University hospital.
Kyle, who was a student at Coláiste na Coiribe, a gaelscoil in Galway city, has been described locally as an outgoing boy and a very talented sportsman.
A member of Galwegians rugby club and Craughwell athletics club, he was due to take part in the All-Ireland track and field championships later in the month and was also part of the Ardrahan community games team participating in the under-16 relay at next month's community games.
His athletics coach, Josephine Gardiner, said yesterday that Kyle was an all-round sportsman who had great potential as a sprinter and had made great progress in the short time since he took up athletics.
She described the reaction to his death locally as "one of total devastation". He is the second-youngest of four siblings and is survived by his parents, John and Aideen, sisters Rachel and Chloe and brother Pearse.
