A 16-year-old boy charged with the murder of schoolboy Alan Higgins last October was released from custody today after his grandmother stood bail for him.
Three boys, all aged 16, were remanded to St Patrick's Institution last week after the Dublin Children's Court heard that their charges for the manslaughter of the schoolboy were upgraded to murder.
Judge Mary Collins heard at the Dublin Children's Court today that on Monday, the High Court had granted bail them which they were yet to take up.
The youngest (16), but aged 15 at the time of the alleged incident, was approved for bail in the High Court on Monday, but an independent surety had to be approved in his case, the court heard.
Judge Collins was told that subject to the court's approval his grandmother would act as bail person for him. The independent surety had been set in the sum of €5,000.
The bail bond stated that he must obey a 8pm to 8am curfew, reside in his family home and sign on daily at Coolock Garda Station until April 24th next for the service of a book of evidence in the case.
The two other boys are also eligible to be released from custody after they were granted High Court bail but they have not taken it up yet. In the meantime, Judge Collins remanded them in custody "with consent to bail" until April 24th.
All three teenagers have been charged with murdering Mr Higgins at the UCI cinema complex, on the Malahide Road, Coolock, on the night of October 12th last as well as robbing him of a mobile phone and a wallet of unknown on the same date.They also face charges for assaults and robberies against other persons on the same date and in the same area.
