GARDAÍ ARE treating as a “tragic accident” the death of an eight- year-old boy who fell off his bike in Allihies in west Cork yesterday afternoon sustaining critical head injuries.
The boy, who was due to return to a local national school this week, was taken to Bantry General Hospital but died en route.
He was cycling in the Allihies area shortly after 5pm yesterday when he fell off his bike and hit his head. Gardaí have confirmed that a vehicle was not involved in the incident.
The boy is one of three children. It is understood his father is a Spanish-born fisherman based in Allihies who is currently at sea.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Co Kerry are interviewing two motorists, including a taxi driver, in connection with the death of 19-year-old student Shane Courtney, who was struck on Friday night while cycling on the outskirts of Killarney. Mr Courtney, from Faha East, was training to take part in a triathlon shortly.
Gardaí have confirmed he was wearing bright clothing at the time of the collision at about 9.15pm on the Milltown/Aghadoe road near the Aghadoe youth hostel. An engineering student at UL, he was the eldest of a family of three children of John Joe and Kathleen Courtney.
