A boy (16) remains in a serious condition in hospital after being hit by a truck on O'Connell Street in Dublin this morning.

Gardaí are investigating the incident in which a truck mounted the pedestrian-only median area of the capital's main street at 8.20am.

At the inquest into the death of a woman after she was struck by a double-decker bus in 2005, Dublin City Coroner, Dr Brian Farrell said he was concerned over the safety of the new plaza at O'Connell Street as it did not have clear road markings, clear signage or drop kerbing to warn pedestrians they were going onto a road.

Marie Buckland (60) was killed in the collision. Her friend Jagdish Mangat was also hit by the Dublin Bus vehicle but recovered.

The coroner's court recorded a verdict of accidental death but strongly recommended the crossing be re-evaluated. The inquest jury asked for a letter to be written to Dublin City Council proposing improvements to make the junction more apparent to pedestrians.
