A 23-year-old Brazilian was sentenced to two years imprisonment at Cavan Circuit Court yesterday on charges of the statutory rape of a girl under 17 in Cavan on June 26th, 2004, almost a week before her death.
Weldo Cavalcante, with an address at Liffey Meats house, Kilinkare, Cavan, has been in custody since last June. Both he and another Brazilian man had been arrested by gardaí investigating the death of Cavan schoolgirl, Jamie Farrelly Maughan.
However, because of time spent on remand he will have only a matter of months to serve, much to the distress of the relatives of the dead girl.
Both men were also charged with not having appropriate working visas. The second Brazilian has since returned home.
The 13-year-old had been found dead in the back garden of a house at Harmony Heights, not far from her home on the Tullacmongan estate.
Jamie had been reported missing almost a week before her body was discovered on July 2nd, 2004.
The inquest into the teenager's death has not yet been held, but will now start as the trial has concluded.
