Republic of Ireland youth international Stephen Brennan will miss the upcoming World Youth Championships in United Arab Emirates at the end of the month.

The Newcastle United player withdrew from manager Gerry Smith's panel because of a thigh injury, which is likely to keep him out for up to four weeks.

"I have spoken to Stephen and he is devastated to be missing the finals," says manager Smith. "It is major disappointment to lose him not only for the team but also for the player himself.

"But typical of the player he is, he is fully supportive of the team and wishes them the very best of luck when they go to the finals."
