An action group of Slane, Co Meath, residents, outraged at Monday's crash, will block the town bridge this afternoon and demand additional measures to improve safety. The Slane Bridge Action Committee was formed after 250 locals attended a public meeting on Tuesday night.

The community has been deeply shocked by the death of infant David Garvey in Monday's crash, which happened on the hill approaching the bridge from the northern end.

The meeting agreed a list of demands: remove the traffic lights governing the one-way system across the bridge; install a third lane made of sand that can act as a bunker for heavy vehicles that go out of control, and lift the conservation order on the bridge so renovations can be made.

On a national level, it wants the Garda to enforce the traffic laws, particularly those obliging the owners of heavy goods vehicles to ensure they are road-worthy.
