A scientist police labelled "Britain's worst stalker" after he terrorised more than 200 victims over seven years has been jailed for life.

Richard Jan (37), firebombed a house and a car in a violent campaign against health officials and legal professionals he believed were trying to have him committed under the Mental Health Act.

Jan also made thousands of menacing phone calls and slashed car tyres as part of what he called "World War Three".

One of his victims, a social worker, was twice hospitalised following attacks outside her home. Jan  also torched her car.

In addition, some of the biochemist's victims were followed home or sent unwanted pizzas and taxis, and, on occasion, even a pest control officer.

Altogether he was linked to a staggering 4,500 "crank calls", a figure detectives dismissed as "the tip of the iceberg".

"You cunningly set out to unnerve and ruin people you thought had crossed you," sentencing Judge Henry Blacksell at London's Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court said today.
