Britain's Jason Gardener was crowned the  World Indoors 60m champion after a nail-biting victory in Budapest tonight.

After two convincing wins in his heat and semi-final, the `Bath Bullet' reserved his best showing for when it mattered most.

With a blistering show of starting, pick-up and finishing speed Gardener roared into the history books, winning in a time of 6.49sec.

That stifled the threat of the ever-dangerous Shawn Crawford, who claimed last weekend's USA title with a world class performance of 6.47sec.

Defeating Crawford also meant Gardener took the gold medal out of American custody for the first time since Charalambos Papadias won the title for Greece
seven years ago.

Crawford, winner of the 200m title three years ago, finished in 6.52sec with Greece's Yeoryios Theodoridis clocking a season's best 6.54sec for third place.
