A hospital nursing sister has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, police said today.

A hospital nursing sister has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, police said today.

Ms Barbara Patricia Salisbury (47), who worked at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Cheshire, was charged this morning as she answered bail at Crewe police station.

She is due to appear at South Cheshire Magistrates' Court in Crewe this afternoon charged with the attempted murder of five elderly patients between May 1999 and April 2002.

They were Mr James Byrne (76), Mr Reuben Thompson (81), Ms Frances May Taylor (88), Mr Frank Owen (92) and Mr Bertram David Maidley (76).

A police spokesman said the charges followed an investigation begun last year after concerns were raised over her treatment of a number of elderly patients prior to their deaths.
