British police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of twin sisters and an elderly couple in northern England, television says.

Sky News said Mark Hobson, 34, was buying a packet of matches at a service station in the village of Shipton, north of York, when a member of staff recognised him from a 'wanted' poster and called police on Sunday.

North Yorkshire police declined to confirm if an arrest had been made, but said an operation had taken place in that area and a road had been closed.

Police conducted a week-long manhunt for Hobson in connection with the murders of twin sisters Claire and Diane Sanderson and pensioners James and Joan Britton in separate attacks 25 miles apart.

Later the same day, the bodies of an elderly couple, 80-year-old James Britton and 82-year-old Joan, were found stabbed and beaten to death in the nearby village of Strensall.
