His death came despite a bid by the British government to convince local authorities to grant him clemency.
The 43-year-old convicted murderer spent more than 16 years on death row after the murder in 1985 of hitchhiker Jean Drew.
Housel admitted picking up Jean Drew, 46, at an Atlanta truck stop, then robbing and raping her before strangling her and crushing her head.
During his sentencing hearing, Housel also admitted he beat to death a Texas truck driver with a hammer and stabbed and slashed the throat of an Iowa man.
In a final statement, Housel said he was "sorry from the very centre of my heart". To his friends and family, he said: "Take care of yourselves. May God be with you all."
Housel then asked for two passages from the Bible to be read to him; Psalm 23, the Lord Is My Shepherd, and chapter five of the Second Letter from St Paul to the Corinthians.
He was then unshackled and put on the execution table and restrained before a prison officer inserted two intravenous tubes, one in each arm.
At 7.18 p.m. local time, the signal to go ahead was given and the first drug, an anaesthetic, put into the intravenous drip, followed by the second, which paralyses the body and causes death.
