Sixty staff at Britvic Ireland's Cork plant are to lose their jobs over the next year after the company decided to consolidate production at its Dublin plant.

The company will invest some €7.6 million to upgrade its Dublin manufacturing operation.

Billy O'Regan, managing director, Britvic Ireland said the move was essential in terms of the economies of scale it offered.

"Whereas the job losses proposed today are very regrettable they form part of a package of measures that will assist the ongoing growth and development of Britvic Ireland which employs over 900 staff on the island of Ireland."

He praised the "exemplary service" of the Cork staff over many years.

Labour TD for Cork East Sean Sherlock said the move represents a particular bias in favour of Dublin metropolitan area while 60 jobs represent a serious blow to the Cork region.

He said: "It is a move that will impact far more in this area than if the same number of jobs were to go in Dublin."
