Telecommunications lobby group IrelandOffline has officially confirmed it is to wind down in the coming days.

Telecommunications lobby group IrelandOffline has officially confirmed it is to wind down in the coming days.

Formed in 2001, the group has been at the forefront of the lobby for improved broadband services throughout Ireland.

IrelandOffline chairman Damien Mulley said: "It's been a long tiring road and the current committee needs to take a break.

"Unfortunately we were unable to find enough people to take over so we instead will close down. Our discussion forum on boards.ie will remain open so the community that formed around IrelandOffline can still interact and perhaps we might see other lobby groups grow out of it."

"Recent changes in the telecoms market such as a better attitude towards consumer from eircom, more exchanges getting enabled, local loop unbundling starting to work and the national broadband tender mean that it is easier for us to step away from this but there are still a few important issues that need to be addressed."

Mr Mulley said two issues that still need to be addressed are flat-rate dialup and reform of telecoms regulator ComReg.

He said some 25 per cent of the population still had to rely on ISDN and dialup access to the internet and that ComReg had not re-examined the price of such access in "many years".

He acknowledged there had been some "very progressive people" in the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, ComReg and many of the telecommunications firms.
