The number of broadband subscriptions in Ireland now exceeds one million, according to the latest report from the Commission for Communications Regulation.
Mobile subscriptions grew by almost 400 per cent in the year to June 2008 and there are now more residential subscriptions in the higher speed broadband category (2 - 10
mbps) than in the lower speed.
Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan said the country was making "great strides" in broadband penetration.
"Exceeding one million broadband subscriptions is undoubtedly a huge achievement. Equally encouraging is the growth in mobile subscriptions which demonstrates the popularity and ease of access to these technologies," he said.
Mr Ryan said the areas of the country that remain entirely unserved by broadband would be dealt with under the National Broadband Scheme which will be "rolled out in the coming months."
The broadband penetration rate at the end of June 2008 stood at 24.3 per cent when mobile broadband was included. Without mobile, the penetration rate was 19.2 per cent.
