THE YOUNGER brother of Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey has been nominated by the Government for appointment as a judge of the District Court.
Dermot Dempsey (53) is a solicitor with almost 30 years’ experience who has run his own practice, Dermot M Dempsey and Company, in Athboy, Co Meath, since 1984. He is a graduate of UCD.
Mr Dempsey was nominated at this week’s Cabinet meeting following a recommendation by the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board (JAAB).
Candidates who apply for the positions are interviewed. The JAAB then submits to the Government seven names it recommends for a vacant position, one of whom is chosen by the Government. Mr Dempsey’s formal appointment as a judge will be made by President Mary McAleese.
A Government statement described Mr Dempsey as a solicitor with “extensive experience in all courts, particularly in the areas of conveyancing, litigation, criminal cases and family law”.
Mr Dempsey is also a member of Dunderry GAA club and is active in training underage teams and fundraising.
Following the enactment of the Courts and Court Officers Act last year, the number of ordinary judges of the District Court was increased from 54 to 60.
