Two brothers have been charged in connection with an assault on a man who died last month.

Two brothers have been charged in connection with an assault on a man who died last month.

Jason Byrne (30), Borness, Mountmellick, Co Laois, and his brother Daniel Byrne (36), of the same address, were charged with the assault on Edward Dempsey on December 18th, 2006.

Mr Dempsey, from Moneyquid, Killeigh, Co Offaly, formerly of Strahard in Mountmellick, died in hospital on October 11th, nearly 10 months after he was assaulted.

The incident occurred near his home in what was thought to be a dispute over land and farm management issues.

He was treated in several hospitals until he died at Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise last month.

At Portarlington District Court yesterday, Judge Eamonn O'Brien remanded the two on continuing bail to appear before the court on February 5th.
