The Taoiseach's intervention in the Mullaghmore dispute in the Burren has resulted in local people withdrawing their protest against the removal of car-parks at the site.

The decision is the final nail in the coffin for the controversial site for an interpretative centre, first mooted 10 years ago.

In the past week protesters - acting in defiance of a High Court order that the Office of Public Works should re-instate the site - twice prevented heavy machinery from gaining access. But at a meeting which continued into the early hours of yesterday, key members of the Burren National Park Support Association and the Kilnaboy Community Development Group agreed to withdraw the protest.

They did so after receiving assurances from local Fianna Fail TD Mr Tony Killeen that other infrastructural projects would go ahead in the area.
