London - Torture, unlawful detention and disappearances in Burundi are on the rise after seven years of civil war, Amnesty International said in a report published yesterday.
It reported a "noticeable escalation" of torture by Burundian security forces since Hutu rebels from the Forces Nationales de Liberation attacked and occupied parts of the capital, Bujumbura, in late February and early March.
The Burundian government spokesman, Mr Luc Rukingama, rejected Amnesty's allegations and said it had no proof of torture.
