Madrid - Thousands of acres of forest and farmland were blazing out of control in north-eastern Spain yesterday as bush fires, whipped up by high temperatures and strong winds, swept through the tinder-dry countryside of Catalonia, writes Jane Walker.
Two firefighters died on Sunday night when their helicopter hit overhead power lines, campers from two campsites and the residents of over a dozen homes were evacuated as the Catalan authorities requested help from neighbouring regions.
